Most people associate a specific smell with "clean": a slightly floral, slightly chemical scent that lingers after a cleaning visit. What a lot of people don't realize is that the smell they're associating with cleanliness is, in the large majority of conventional products, a synthetic fragrance added specifically to create that association, layered over surfaces regardless of whether they're actually clean underneath.
Scent and cleanliness aren't the same thing
A surface can smell strongly "clean" while still carrying bacterial residue, and a surface can be genuinely sanitized while having almost no scent at all. Conventional cleaning products have trained most people to associate a specific synthetic smell with the idea of cleanliness, which is more a marketing achievement than a chemistry one. The smell and the actual cleaning outcome are only loosely related.
What's actually creating our scent
We don't add fragrance to our kit. The scent our clients notice after a visit comes from the essential oils we use specifically for their antimicrobial properties: tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus. These aren't included for scent first; they're included because independent research supports their genuine antimicrobial effect, and the scent is simply what those oils smell like in their natural, undiluted form.
This is a meaningful distinction. A synthetic fragrance is engineered purely for scent, with zero functional cleaning benefit, and frequently includes undisclosed compounds under the general "fragrance" label. Our essential oil blend is doing actual antimicrobial work, and the scent is a byproduct of that function, not the goal of it.
Why the "less is more" scent profile is intentional
Clients sometimes notice that our finished homes have a lighter, more natural scent than they're used to from a conventional service, rather than the stronger, more synthetic "fresh linen" or "ocean breeze" smell associated with a lot of commercial products. That's by design. A heavier synthetic scent is often masking rather than resolving whatever odor was originally present. A lighter, natural scent from essential oils used at effective but not overwhelming concentrations means less olfactory noise and a genuinely fresher-smelling result, not a stronger-smelling one.
A note on sensitivity and preference
Because our scent comes from essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, we're able to adjust it in ways a conventional product often can't. Clients with fragrance sensitivities, young infants in the home, or cats (which require extra caution around concentrated essential oils) can request a lighter dilution or omission entirely, without losing the underlying cleaning performance from the rest of the kit.
